Seven is a non-narrative allegorical series illustrating the seven deadly sins. Ira, Avaritia, Acedia, Gula, Invidia, Superbia and Luxuria depict respectively wrath, greed, sloth, gluttony, envy, pride and lust. The series is intended to be visually approachable but candidly reveal a non-literal interpretation of each classical sin. In Seven, I explore the nature of sin as an outwardly appealing, reflectively disturbing and entirely intriguing subject.
Seven presents seven identically sized, vertically oriented semi-abstract images with a somewhat blurred outer edge and a clearly defined focal area in the upper centre. This visual commonality ties the series together despite strong differences in subject matter and colouration. Intense colours are used to grab the eye and viscera, and a range of different tonalities and textures at varying densities are used to reward both distant regard and close-up inspection. Technically, each work is the result of a series of overall mathematical transformations of a single digital photographic exposure; no painting was done.
