Interface : Interface -- the boundary between air and water.

Water can be a mirror, and it can be as transparent as glass. When wind disturbs its surface, the reflections of what is above and refractions of what is beneath come together to create constantly changing patterns.

I've recorded some of these patterns, found at local lakes and ponds during different atmospheric conditions and times of day, and by enhancing contrast, careful cropping and occasionally rotating the image 90 degrees found meaning in the chaos.

Shed 16, Variations : Details from the faded murals on Shed #16 in the Vieux Port at Montreal.

"The midmorning sunlight was hard and sharp, and the metal siding produced its own shadows, adding another layer of depth to the already deep texturing of the faded and peeling paint. The many visual realms of these images produces an extended story that begins decades ago with the construction of the shed through the painting of the murals and their subsequent fading and peeling; the sun bleached pigments and flakes of paint; the steel buckled, dented and rusted; the shadows of the corrugations which enhance the three-dimensionality of the print when lit from the right side, and the paper surface and texture itself. Not simply pictures of graffiti, Shed 16, Variations is an exploration of time, light, texture, surfaces (and what lies beneath them), and the inevitability of decay." -- Sean M Puckett

Photographed with a digital sensor; post-processed using my own software.

Seven (Sins) : Seven is a non-narrative allegorical series illustrating the seven deadly sins. Ira, Avaritia, Acedia, Gula, Invidia, Superbia and Luxuria depict respectively wrath, greed, sloth, gluttony, envy, pride and lust. The series is intended to be visually approachable but candidly reveal a non-literal interpretation of each classical sin. In Seven, I explore the nature of sin as an outwardly appealing, reflectively disturbing and entirely intriguing subject.

Seven presents seven identically sized, vertically oriented semi-abstract images with a somewhat blurred outer edge and a clearly defined focal area in the upper centre. This visual commonality ties the series together despite strong differences in subject matter and colouration. Intense colours are used to grab the eye and viscera, and a range of different tonalities and textures at varying densities are used to reward both distant regard and close-up inspection. Technically, each work is the result of a series of overall mathematical transformations of a single digital photographic exposure; no painting was done.

Mandala Elemental : Mandala Elemental is a representation of nine different elements that make up the universe: Earth, Air, Water, Fire, Metal, Plants, Animals, the Void, and Light/Creation.

Mandala is a ancient Sanskrit term meaning "circle." Today it is generally used to refer to geometric patterns that symbolically represent the cosmos. Some religious sects create mandalas from sand, hand scattered onto the floor over a period of days. All mandalas share a common intent of providing a focus point for meditation, a sort of visual "om."

The mandalas I have created for Mandala Elemental follow this plan of geometrical patterning, symbolic representation and intent for meditative study. Each of the mandalas can be studied in sequence during meditation to provide a flow of attention, or a single mandala can be studied to explore its individual meaning as interpreted by the viewer at that time.

Technically, each mandala is comprised of a single digitally captured image of a real instance of the element represented by the mandala.. The image is then manipulated through complex geometric functions that create a "warp field" that transforms the original 2D image into a 3D "lightsphere", which is then projected back to 2D form, now distorted into the new geometry. Adjustments of colour, contrast and tone are then made to finish each mandala.

About the Images
I feel it is important not to reveal too much about the mandalas before you have a chance to study them, so I'm placing mandala-specific commentary in a second gallery. When you are ready to learn more, click here.

Disturbances : Disturbances is a set of 12 images that explore the transformation of visceral feelings of disgust and revulsion into morbid curiosity and finally intellectual stimulation. On initial viewing, each disturbance resembles what might be a cadaver’s brain, a suppurating flesh wound, a decaying scrap of skin or some other horrifying object. On closer examination, the details and textures of the image reveal themselves to be something completely different: the wrinkled forms of dried paint spatters. This dichotomy of appearance makes each Disturbance a compelling work of art.

I create the steel frames in my studio by forming and welding steel stock of varying lengths. The grungy, aged aesthetic is created through the use of high-spatter FCAW welding techniques, heavy wire brushing and acid rinsing. Each frame is thoroughly washed for safety and then coated in acrylic to preserve its appearance.

Photographs, the Disturbances were digitally captured at extreme close range (less than one inch in most cases) with a fisheye lens. This produces distortion of the original shape of the paint surface adding to the disorienting effect. A vignette was added to darken the edges and emphasize the detail in the centre. Final adjustments of colour, contrast and tone were then made to prepare the image for printing.

Canvas prints are available with floating steel frames. The prints are wired to be hung diagonally or horizontally. I prefer diagonal presentation but the web doesn't. Ask for pricing.

Jupiter : Jupiter is a set of four works inspired by Mozart's 41st symphony.

Each image was processed using digital simulations of traditional darkroom processes. No pixel painting, selective blurring or other retouching has been done. What you are seeing is exactly what the camera saw, adjusted for colour and contrast.

The master prints of these images -- canvas tapestries 42x69 inches -- hung behind the Kitchener/Waterloo Symphony on November 2&3, 2007 during performances of the Mozart piece that inspired them.
